Nepal earthquake Prayer & Relief
Dear brothers and sister,
We are gathered here this evening at the Arulmigu Shri Ramalingeswarar Temple in Bangsar to jointly
pray for Nepal and its People. I am deeply saddened by the recent calamity that has struck Nepal.
The MyNADI Foundation, Arulmigu Shree Ramalingeswarar Temple Bangsar and Damai Disabled Persons
Association have joined with Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram to organise this programme.
We thank Honorable Dr Niranjan Man Singh Basnyat, the Nepalese Ambassador to Malaysia for joining
us this evening and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones
and to the thousands who are affected by this devastating natural disaster.
The death toll from the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday 25th April has risen to
more than 2,500 and more than 5,200 people have been injured. There are many who are missing.
The powerful aftershocks yesterday, Sunday 26th April between Kathmandu and Everest unleashed more
avalanches in the Himalayas and caused panic in the capital, where hospital workers stretchered
patients out into the street as it was too dangerous treat them indoors.
The quakes caused widespread damage to Nepal’s infrastructure which has further hampered search
and rescue operations.
At least 17 people believed to have been killed on Everest, and 61 injured, by an avalanche which left
mountaineers calling for helicopter assistance to evacuate the most badly wounded. It is the most
powerful event in Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake. There are also casualties reported in
parts of areas of India, China and Bangladesh that adjoin Nepal. Outside Nepal, at least 61 people were
killed in India and several deaths were reported in Tibet and Bangladesh. At least four Chinese citizens
were killed during the quake, according to media reports citing the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.
Many historic landmarks, including the Dharahara tower, have been reduced to rubbles following the
quake. Buildings in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kathmandu Durbar Square collapsed, as did
dozens of beautiful historical temples. Many of these temples and historical buildings cannot be
restored to their original states.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said that Malaysia is ready to extend assistance to Nepal once
the access to the Tribhuvan International Airport is reopened. Prime Minister Najib Razak announced
that Malaysia will send 20 medical doctors from Mercy Malaysia and SMART organisations along with a
30-man rescue team and medicines and medical supplies to Kathmandu by C-130 aircraft.
Other Governments are scrambling to locate thousands of their nationals and relatives took to social
media to find their loved ones. The international community has also pledged support and aid packages
to Nepal.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram has launched the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund. Our
goal is to raise as much cash as possible. No amount is small as when everyone contributes, we will be
able to raise a substantial amount of money. All contributions will be acknowledged by official receipts.
Maamandram will ensure that all contributions are channeled to the authorities and that it reaches to
those in need. We appreciate if you can contribute and also pass this message to your friends and
family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters in Nepal who are undergoing extreme
challenges due to the natural calamity.
