International Yoga Day Declaration by the United Nations

Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram applauds and welcomes the resolution by the United

Nations to declare and observe 21st of June as International Day of Yoga.

An unprecedented 177 out of the total 193 member states of the United Nations have co-

sponsored a resolution on International Yoga Day. This is the highest number of co-sponsors

ever for any resolution of this nature in the history of the United Nations. The proposal was

made by the Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi during his address to the United

Nations General Assembly on 27th September 2014. It is an effort to ensure a vibrant, happy and

prosperous human race.

Yoga has gained popularity because of its scientific approach and benefits. The sheer number of

supporters as well as the smooth adoption also symbolizes the strong international support and

human spirit for the wholesome wellbeing of mankind.

Yoga is a 5,000 year old physical, mental and spiritual practice having its origin in India. It is a

vast discipline which has remedies for various physical illnesses. Yoga postures effectively

enhance the efficiency of the respiratory, circulatory, nervous, digestive and endocrine systems

and many other organs in the human body. Acharya Pathanjali, the founder of Yoga, prescribed

the control of Prana (life breadth) as the means to control the body, mind and soul.

If every child is taught Yoga and Meditation, there will be tremendous reduction in various

social illnesses and violence, worldwide. This is achievable within one or two generations and

the entire Humanity shall benefit from this ancient treasure.

Maamandram takes this opportunity to call everyone to practice Yoga as it is the doorway to

physical and spiritual wellbeing. Yoga subsequently rewards one with good health and inner

happiness.

The date 21st June is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Also known as

summer solstice, it has special significance in many parts of the world. Malaysia Hindhudharma

Maamandram being a part of the global Indian/Hindu fraternity is thankful and glad that this

event is observed worldwide. Maamandram is scheduled to organise a mass Suryanamaskar on

this day, beginning from 2015 in Kuala Lumpur.
